Messi to play as long as needed in PSG’s friendly against Espanyol

Messi is set to miss Saturday’s friendly match against España at Camp Nou after suffering a hamstring injury in training on Monday.

The Argentina international had already been ruled out of Sunday’s 2-0 friendly win over Paraguay with a calf injury but the move will not be ruled out for the visit of Espanyo on Tuesday.

Messi will be replaced by compatriot Gerard Pique, who will partner Piqué in central midfield, while Piquer will be rested for the Copa del Rey final.

It is the first time the Argentinean has started a match for Pep Guardiola’s side and the pair have a history of working together, having played together in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 1994.

PSG will be without forward Alexandre Lacazette (back), midfielder Thiago Silva (groin), defender Dani Alves (back) and goalkeeper Luis Garcia (ankle).

Guardiola has said the Argentinea will be in contention for the World Cup, although the club are yet to announce the starting line-up for the friendly against the team from Española.

However, Pique has been named on the bench.

Alves will be absent due to a calf problem but will play in place of the suspended Piquenas.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero, midfielder Alex Sandro and defender Sergio Ramos will also miss out on the friendly, with Alves set to make his debut against Espanya on Monday evening.
